I'm a runner


Thank you to Two Writing Teachers for hosting the Slice of Life each Tuesday!

For some people, saying, "I am a writer." is no easy feat. For me, that's a piece of cake. I am a writer not because I'm particularly creative or do some amazing crafting with words, but because I come to my blog day in and day out and write. I publish things that I love and other things that I think are just okay, and some that are crap, but I still hit the publish button and put it out there. Because this:

But running, that's another story. If I'm being totally honest, it's exercising in general. I'm not one of those people who loves it and wants to do it all the time. I'm like that with writing. But running, I would rather:

  • Do a marathon - on Netflix
  • Clean my kitchen
  • Grade some papers
  • Make a rubric
  • Floss my teeth
  • Go grocery shopping
  • Anything else
The thing is, once I tell myself what my best friend advised (you don't have to want to run, you just have to actually do it) and get my feet to the pavement, I kinda don't mind. And as I'm running, I listen to some good tunes and watch people around the neighborhood and then when I get home, I love to sit on my stoop and cool down, post some stuff on Runkeeper (including the update I drafted as I ran). And then, my friends like my running status, and that is really motivating.

I also find that when I'm running every other day consistently, I like it more. I bet if I just kept going and going and going, maybe I could be like those people who love running?

(Not holding my breath!)

But, I'm a runner. A slow runner, an inconsistent runner, a nonpassionate runner, but I do it enough to call myself a runner.

  1. Love this. Especially as I sit here contemplating.... walk? or write? If I walk now, I'll write later, but if I write now, I will NOT walk later. It is already 80 and humid and in an hour it will already be unbearably hot. Okay, thanks for the motivation! p.s. I tell my children something very similar to your friend's advice all the time: "You don't have to like it, you just have to do it" applies to just about anything in life!

  2. I once had a post titled "I am NOT a Runner" if memory serves. I'm far too social for running. I need to do interactive things like Zumba, which is the ONLY exercise I've ever actually enjoyed. I can dance all day long without even realizing I'm working out. That's why I love it. I'm good at tricking myself. I also try to be good at tricking my students into learning without them ever realizing it! :)

  3. I'm impressed that you write every day. The only time I do that is during March Slice of Life. Trying to get back into the exercising groove. Love your list of things you would rather do than run.

  6. I feel exactly the same way about running. It's just getting over that hump and getting out there that is the hard part. Once I do it, I actually kinda like it....just like writing some days. :))

  7. HI! I am your newest follower and I just recently became a Reading Coach in my county and started my own blog! I am getting used to being a writer. I also am a runner, but I feel the same way you do. It's not always what I want to do, but I know I have to do it! :-)
