Today I was so sleepy when my alarm went off at 5:45. I got out of bed and then sat on the couch, checking email, glancing at Instagram, and then going over to Twitter, where I was surfing, surfing, surfing. By 6, I still wasn't in the shower, and I usually take about an hour and 15 minutes to get ready each morning. It's the hair. If I wash it in the am, then I almost always dry it and either curl or use a flat iron on it. Every day. It's just kinda become routine.
But today, with as tired as I was, and on as short of time as I was, I decided to just put some moose in it and let it air dry. I never wear my hair like this - I don't particularly like it because it just kinda goes everywhere, which I'm always styled up for work.
I get to work and my colleagues tell me how much they like it. "Nice beachy waves, Michelle!" "OOhhhh so cute!" I'm super appreciative, but it just looks like a mess to me!
The kids, on the other hand, had a different response.
"Ms. Brezek, you look different."
Little People in my Head (LPIMH): Hmm...different? Not exactly beautiful, but, hey, they're kids.
"Ms. Brezek, what did you do to your hair?"
LPIMH: Uuumm...nothing?
Then my favorite, from a little one in one of my intervention groups...the other boy who comes with her was a little late, so as we walked into my office together, she's telling me, "Ms. Brezek, your hair looks kinda crazy today!"
Real talk.
She continues on... "Are you tired? I mean sometimes when I'm tired I end up with a crazy hair day, too."
Christine, my work bestie chimes in, "Y, that's not a very nice thing to say to Ms. Brezek!"
At this time, Y gets a little self conscious - you can see her cheeks flush and she looks down a little, but she carries on, explaining how she has crazy hair every day...
I say, "So are you tired every day?"
"No," she replies, "my hair is just always crazy."
I wish I had the audio of the conversation - it was seriously so funny. Yesterday Juliana told me I looked beautiful...today, I'm tired.
The cool thing about kids is that since they don't filter anything, it's never a question about what they're thinking. Adults on the other hand, well that's a story for another day!

I really did like your hair today! I love the honesty of kids, too! Most of the time...
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this giggle! I'm sure you looked great but I can just imagine the scene in your classroom. You've got to love the unfiltered comments. Glad you laughed about it!
ReplyDeleteI do love kids' honesty. No filter and no ulterior motives. It's just crazy hair, plain and simple. (WW Erin)
ReplyDeleteThat's HILARIOUS! Kids are SO BRUTALLY HONEST! And it reminded me of a hair story of my own. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThat moment was amazingly hilarious! It totally caught me off guard :) I loved your hair too! Nothing crazy about it at all!
